The boulders in Tappen Square are painted with good wishes the graduating class.
I don't remember this from my time at Oberlin. I think this tradition started later after the time when I graduated.
I do remember a lot of things that were done by students which were not authorized - such as kidnapping the aluminum statue of Charles Martin Hall and putting it on the roof of Peters or in an outhouse. Also the college required the boys who drove to school to take their license plates and turn them in to the Dean of Men so that they would not be able to drive during the school year. One time the boys found an old car and carried it and put it on the steps of Peters (where the deans offices were) with a note that they didn't have the license plates, but here was the whole car.
