  Golden Buddha at Wat Traimit

Wat Traimit is not particularly impressive as far as Bangkok Wats go, but the real reason to go is to see the famous Golden Buddha. The 3m high Buddha statue is made entirely from 5.5 tons of solid gold, making it the largest solid gold icon in the world.

The Buddha was discovered in 1957 when a large stucco covered Buddha was accidentally dropped while being moved, and the resulting cracks revealed the golden Buddha beneath. It is thought that the Buddha was originally covered hundreds of years ago in order to hide it from the invading Burmese.
