As you walk up the Ape Canyon trail, you walk along cliffs overlooking the vast lahar of the Muddy River. Much of the 5.5 miles to the trail's junction with the Loowit Trail, lie within huge old growth forest - standing in marked defiance of the devastation just meters to the west.
