Tower of Belém is another outstanding Monument by the river. It was built between 1515 and 1521 by order of King D. Manuel I. Formerly it stood on the middle of the River and was the point from which the ships sailed into the seas, however nowadays it is situated on the river’s margin.

Formerly a fortress, the Tower is another fine example of Manueline and Gothic styles. I believe that the beauty of the Tower is on its amazingly carved exteriors, as inside its rooms used to be a jailhouse and weapons warehouse. From the Tower you will also enjoy a rather pleasant view over the River (but not as outstanding as from top of the Monument, since the Tower is not that high).

Address: Av. Brasília, 1400-038 Lisboa,
Directions: On the waterfront
