"Padrão dos Descobrimentos - map" Padrao dos Descobrimentos - Discoveries Monument Tip by micas_pt

by micas_pt

In front of the Monument there is an enormous world map inside a wind rose designed on the floor. Be sure not to miss it, while you're walking across it. (See my photo, shoot from the top of the tower). As I said, everything in Belém is Discoveries-related, even the symbols that illustrate the floor!! This particular map is shaded in pink, white and black tones. I sometimes wonder if passers-by notice where they are walking, as they keep looking up to the Monument and seem to miss what is just underneath their feet.

This map on the ground was offered in 1960 by South African Republic and the central map shows the Portuguese routes in the 15th and 16th centuries. Notice that the map is illustrated with the Portuguese ships and mermaids!
