The romantic way to reach the island is of course by train as they are put on ferries and shipped across the Messina Strait (at least until there is a bridge). The ferry means that Sicily is not served by the Italian Eurostar trains but I found the InterCity ones quite OK. There are several trains a day from Rome and a night train from Milan which arrives late morning.
