"Sleep on the beach, locals take care of you!" Mexico Off The Beaten Path Tip by bluejack

Mexico Off The Beaten Path: 212 reviews and 213 photos

If you're looking for the most awesome experience of your life, get yourself to Mexico, hop on a bus towards the white port city of Veracruz. After a few days of colonial splendour and tropical nights dancing to the coolest Trios and Marimaba sounds, head towards the more secluded beach areas. Ask locals on the way for directions to the beach. As you get further away from city limits, stick to the coast line and where you see signs (usually old, semi legible) that say "playa" follow them and you will probably end up on a pretty deserted beach, where locals will approach you (you'll need to understand and speak some Spanish) and offer you accommodation on "their beach", under a "palapa" (palmleaf-roofed, four pillared concoction) with hammocks. They'll bring you freshly caught and cooked fish, coconuts, the sweetest pineapples ever, and cold beers...daily!!! You'll get to sleep on the beach, swinging to sleep in your hammock, drink cold beers, go for long walks, swim, lounge around and practice your Spansh with the friendliest people on the planet! And the best part is, if you go out of season, the beauty of a totally deserted beach...it feels like you're on your own island. Get going! There's also the gorgeous but more commercial island of women (Isla Mujeres) off the coast of Cancun if you want the convenience of a small supermarket, shops, reastaurants and bars, and the most beautiful beach I have ever seen...amazing sunsets, crystal clear water, water sports, a pretty bustling bar scene (some bars right on the beach under palm trees...with the best pina coladas and margarithas!) and the chance to hook up with fellow travellers (there's a good hostel on the island).
