I travelled by Greyhound bus both times in Australia. They take you pretty much everywhere you want to go and there's even some free tours included.
There are many different passes to choose from; some with set routes and some where you purchase kms.
First time we had an "Aussie Highlights" buspass taking us round the east half of Australia. A 1-day tour of Kakadu and a 3-day tour around the Red Centre were included.
Second time we'd bought the "All Australian" pass, but we had to have at change since Louise had broken her ankle and we couldn't travel as fast as we needed. There were no problems in changing the bus pass at all!
Since I still haven't got a driver's license this will definitely be my mode of transport the next time in OZ as well.
