If I have to point out my favorite fountain or
monument it will be this one. It is quit amazing.

It is a 20 meters high pink Swedish granite obelisk.
The monument was erected for town mayor
'Jules Anspach'.
The monument isn't located
at it's original location. It used to be on the
Anspachlaan but can now be found at the
'Baksteenkaai , Quai aux Briques'.

The nice thing about this monument is that
evrything on it has it's own meaning.
For Instance :
-on top of the monument you can see a
gold platted 'Sint-Michiel'- the saint of
-Two bronze statues symbolize the gratitude
of the city. (by 'Julien Dillens') they wear a
crown like a brick wall. Symbolizing that the
city used to be walled.
-Also made by Dillens is a lady the city
magistrate with a crown made of oak leaves.
Symbol for power. The owl on her head is for
wisdom and the balance at her feet for justice.

- a third figure by 'Paul Devigne'symbolizes the
arch to cover up the river Zenne.
He also designed the amulet with the
portait of Jules Anspach.

(the cynical part is that Brussels now has a
big lane because of Anspach- The Zenne
was at that time a big unhygienic drain- that his monument was removed from this lane
to give the traffic some more space.)

Read on to the next tip , I'm not finished.

Address: 'Baksteenkaai , Quai aux Briques'.
Directions: Located throughout the city.
