Since April the 3rd 1861, Napoleon I rests in peace in a crypt under golden Dome. His body rests in a sarcophagus of red granite. Inside this huge sarcophagus, his body is further enclosed in 6 additional caskets: the first of tin-sheeted iron, the second of mahogany, the third and fourth of lead, the fifth of ebony and the sixth of oak. These were then placed in red sarcophagus.
