Not very far from the centre of Edinburgh and you can be in rolling countryside, full of patchwork fields, stone castles and hairy cows or sheep.

Keep an eye out for these ginger cattle - reknown for the excellent quality of their meat - and an oddly mild temperament (except when guarding their young, like any of us).

Highland cattle are not everywhere - but you are sure to see them. Usually in very small herds of 10 or so, not big farms.

Head for Crieff in Perthshire - home of the Drovers Cattle Trysts ( back in the times of Rob Roy and cattles rievers, Clans and pre Bonnie Prince Charlie) - and in the foothills of the Highlands.

Visitor attractions include castles, distilleries and drover exhibition, but I'd go for the countryside, whether touring by car or bus / bike.
