If you travel from the UK, Eurostar might probably be a better choice than flying over. It is much more relaxing and in general involves much less waiting. The train also terminates at Gare du Nord which is part of the city centre and has excellent Metro connections from there.
The Metro in Paris covers a very large area. It reaches into attractions in the suburbs such as the Versailles and Disneyland Park. Tickets can be brought in bulk which offers substantial savings. The direction of the trains are very much identified by the end stations (at least I figured at the time).
