So when I returned to Uluru in 1999 I had decided not to climb the rock and instead walk around the base.
Also my cousin had just got the cast of her broken ankle the week before so I was walking with her - busy waving fies off her face and my own. She was busy clinging to her crutches so she would have succumbed to the flies if I hadn't been there. She really is a viking girl - walking all 9km around the rock on crutches.
You get to see so much this way. There are several caves with rock paintings. Some places are so sacred that the path breaks away from the rock because you are not allowed to see it.
I actually found this a lot better than the climb, because you saw so many different things, and the photo opportunities were much better.
