  The McKinley Memorial Monument
by kdoc13

There is something kind of cool about a President who ran his entire campaign while sitting on his front porch in a small ohio town, and never leaving to go out an make speaches in every place in the nation. The man was very much symbolic of Canton. So, at his death the people of Canton erected this memorial to the man.

It is astounding to see up close, because you just don't expect it to be there. The architecture and style of it are so different from anything else in the area, that it just increases the magnitude of the effect.

The Memorial itself sits in the largest park in Canton. It has long since shifted away from the sad reminder of death, to a place where locals "Party with the Pres!" The fourth of July is one of those occasions where the monument serves as a backdrop for the festivities, with the marble of the dome reflecting the fireworks and the cheers of the crowds. Artists love to sketch the building, and it is often a place to come and sit and reflect on life while getting a great view of the park
