Houses In Caves - The Whole Town!
by scotlandscotour

Setenil Town in a Gorge
North of Ronda - this town is brilliant to see - street upon street of houses cut into the rock, where earlier societies carved out and extended caves. Looks to have been a significant place on routes from Madrid to the ports - great bandit country with all that American gold coming through!

Houses are one room deep, and tiny. Many are collapsing and suffering damp - but tourism or grants seems to be rejuvinating the place.

It looks to be a meeting place of rivers, as the gorge is complex, meaning many streets and a maze of cave houses. Its easy to get lost, like a mole, beneath the skyline.

The streets are ridiculously narrow, so if your hire car is anyting bigger than a class 3, expect scrapes and nervous passengers. Best get out and walk.

explore in an hour - or extend by enjoying tapas in the bars. A great place to avoid the summer heat.

Directions: north of Ronda towards Olvera, on the CA422 road.
