Saint Alexius where the prioress ruled
by Pavlik_NL

The enclosed environment of the beguinage and it's religious institution, made it also possible to put this small community under a leader, often a woman. She was called the "grootmeesteres" or prioress in English and she lived in the midst of "her" citizens. Near the end of the 18th century, the Prioress of the beguinage lived in the corner house next to the beguinage church. The house, called the Saint Alexius is from 1726 and in late Baroque style.

Address: Nonnenstraat
Directions: Next to the Beguinage church
