Long Island Things to Do: 57 reviews and 59 photos

"Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the St. James General Store, the oldest continuously operating general store in the United States. It's fully restored to its original turn-of-the-century charm and furnishings. The Store is part of the Suffolk County Parks historic sites and is operated by the Friends for Long Island's Heritage; proceeds help to support historic restoration and historic interpretative programs in the County."

I was here recently while filming my LI doc. and maybe my parents brought me here when I was 3. It sits on the LI Heritage Trail which is just gaining popularity since its designation this year. The place is very well peserved and has origional furnishings. I bought some string licorice (black one) here along with traditional LI music. I never even knew there was traditional LI music. There is a 1920 Apothecary feel inside with all old bottles and jars on shelves that look untouched since World War ll. The general store is in a stones throw of Deepwells Farm. Its definately worth a stop
