"Ultra cool, great rooms" Gastwerk Hotel Hamburg Tip by londonbabe

Gastwerk Hotel Hamburg, Hamburg: 553 reviews and 5 photos

This hotel has, rightly, featured in most of the 'hip hotels' reports since it opened in 2000. It's not exactly in the centre of Hamburg (check for the closest railway station as it's at least a 20 minute cab ride from the main Bahnhof) but it's worth getting there!
The public spaces are terrific, with wonderful flower arrangements and water features. And the rooms aren't a let-down. Plenty of space even in the standard doubles, with comfy beds and feather quilts.
The bathrooms are lovely - etched glass doors to the shower, and a bamboo ladder towel rail - just tooo funky!
The Italian restaurant attached is quite expensive, but with an excellent wine list. I didn't feel out of place dining alone, and was able to listen in to some great conversations. One very small niggle - my risotto was made with long grain rice instead of arborio.

Unique Qualities: Stunning conversion of an old gas works - combines utilitarian architecture with the best of modern hotel design.
