Vali's Alpine Restaurant and Del: "Unique to Wallowa Lake" Joseph Restaurant Tip by ZanieOR
Joseph Restaurants: 4 reviews and 4 photos
Vali's is situated in the center of Wallowa Lake's resort community, a unique place that you take visiting friends.
It has been operated for over 25 by Mike and Maggie Vali, who are both transplanted Hungarians, refuges from the Communists when they were in power. He escaped as a young man, she with her family as a teenager, and they met in the United States.
Memorial Day - Labor Day they are open four nights a week, Wednesday-Saturday, require reservations and have two seatings.
My daughter's in-laws, here from New Jersey with members of their gourmet club, reserved Vali's for the wedding rehearsal dinner, and everyone was more than happy.
Everyone loves Maggie, who's favorite phrase is "You betcha".
Favorite Dish: Everything is good at Vali's, so my favorite depends on the day of the week:
Wednesday, Cabbage Rolls; Thursday, Hungarian Kettle Goulash; Friday, Shish Kabobs (for rehearsal dinner, delicious); and Char Broiled Steak, Saturday night. (They must have two dishes one night, as I've left out Chicken Paparika.) Prices for dinner range from $9 to $13, plus the cost of dessert (Black Hills chocolate cake or Apple Strudel) and drinks (wine, beer, cocktails, coffee, etc.)
Weekend mornings -nly a continental breakfast is served during the season.
Address: 59811 Wallowa Lake Highway, Joseph.
Price Comparison: about average
Directions: Drive about six miles south of Joseph, in middle of resort area at head of Wallowa Lake.
