  Dutch Architecture at its Best.
by tylercdurden2004

The thing that really amazes me about The Netherland and Amsterdam in particular is the houses and buildings. Its really mind blowing the architecture used to accomodate living in such confined space. First thing you notice is how all the facades are jutting up in different angles, a testiment to dutch value on individuality. The second thing is the huge windows in the buildings. And the third is how each building leans in towards the canals and streets. This serves the purpose of moving fixtures into the house through the huge windows. Because the building leans towards the streets means eliminating damage should the fixtures start to swing while lifting it into the house. The huge windows also allow for natural light to enter and give an air of openess to dutch buildings. At the top of each building is a hook which is used to lift the fixtures in. The windows are used as entry points, because as anyone who has been in these buildings knows the stairs are more like ladders than staircases. Dutch furniture design is also a product of the lack of space, very efficient and modern, sort of like Ikea but a hell of a lot better.

Directions: All over the place. Just walk around.
