"Longs Peak" Colorado Things to Do Tip by traveldave

Colorado Things to Do: 315 reviews and 462 photos

This is a view of 14,255-foot (4,345-meter) Longs Peak as seen from the Forest Canyon Overlook, located high above timberline near the 12,000-foot (3,658-meter) level.

There are no other mountains of comparable height around Longs Peak, so it stands out over the high plains of eastern Colorado and is visible for almost 100 miles (161 kilometers). Pioneers traveling westward across the plains used the distant mountain as a landmark to help them find their way along the Front Range. Viewed from the plains, the profile of the south ridge resembles a beaver climbing the mountain.

The first man to climb Longs Peak was the famous explorer of the American West, John Wesley Powell, in 1868.

Directions: Rocky Mountain National Park is located about 75 miles (121 kilometers) northwest of Denver.
