I'd heard of this cemetary a lot and really wanted to go there. I've been in a lot of cemetaries -and no I'm not a goth - but this one is something special. Not only is it the final resting place of many famous writers (Balzac,Moliere, Wilde), painters (Ernst), composers (Chopin, Bizet) or otherwise famous/notorious figures (Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, Isadora Duncan... the list goes on!) but its a mass of beautiful and poignant tombstones and, despite the large number of visitors, a peaceful place for a walk around. If you go and are planning on looking for particular graves I would advise you to try and get a map - which according to my guide book should be available at the gate - as the stones are all bunched together, not set out in neat rows and easy to find!
Location: Boulevard de Ménilmontant
Metro: Pere Lachaise, Philippe Auguste, Gambetta
