Montmartre retains something of a village atmosphere with its cobbled streets and small squares, sitting up on the hill. The area has been famous for its writers, artists (Renoir and Van Gogh both made it their home), vineyards and cabarets. Its a great place just to wander round, through the beautiful squares and back streets. For me it felt more like how I imagine a French town would be like, compared to the grandeur of the centre of Paris. There is still a small vineyard as well as a famous cemetary, the Sacré-Coeur, Place de Tertre and the Moulin Rouge among many other sights to see in the area.
