Charles Gascoigne is considered to be the founder of the city.
He was appointed the first director of the iron foundry from which the city sprang.
He was its director from 1795 till 1806.
You can see a medal in his honor at the city history and culture museum (on the picture) and read about his life and work at one of the exhibits of the museum in Karl Marx Street (former Kazan Street).
It is interesting to note that many streets in Old Russia were called after Kazan, the Tatar capital, to commemorate the historic Russian victory in the centuries-old struggle between the Tatars and the Russians.
Address: Marx Street
Directions: On the way to Lenin Street from downtown, down from Red Square.
