The moat, the swans, the willow trees & stone walls... they all make up part & parcel of KOKYO which sits on the former site of Edo Castle.

Before 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo.
Tokugawa Ieyasu (a most powerful shogun appointed by the Emperor) established his feudal government here in 1603 & the city had since grown into one of the largest to (ie metropolis) in Japan.

Tokyo is one of Japan's 47 prefectures (ken). It's not called ken but to instead.
Within Tokyo-to, there are 23 ku (city wards), 26 cities, 5 towns & 8 villages.
Now you get an idea of how big Tokyo-to is!
The population?
At least 13 millions! & that's just a rough estimate. Could be as large as 15 millions!

The word TOKYO essentially means Eastern Capital.
