At each side of the entrance to a shrine, you might be greeted by a pair of lions, guardian dogs or foxes (Inari Shrines).

These are part of the structure & objects found at Shinto shrines.

Inari shrines are dedicated to the kami of rice. The most famous of which is in Kyoto, Fushimi Inari Shrine.
