  The Amber Fort
by Paul2001

The Amber Fort is one of the premiere fortress in India. The fortress is located in the town of Amber just 11km north of the Jaipur. The fortress rests on a hill that overlooks the town. From the outside it looks quite forbiddening however the interior of the fort is one the most beautiful in all of India. The entrance painted facade is truly stunning. Inside are numerous beautifully decorated chambers and apartments. The murals are quite interesting and amongst the best that you will see in Rajasthan. An interesting feature is that many of the murals have jewels embedded into them. It makes the walls spectacularly colourful. The fort also has a lovely garden that you can stroll through.
The Amber Fort was built in the late 16th century by Raja Man Singh. Additions where added in 1727. Most of the complex was built in creamy while marble and red sandstone.
To climb the hill up to the palace you can take a painted elephant. This is very popular amongst tourists who will few other opportunities to ride an elephant.
I rented an autorickshaw to get to Amber for about R300. As with most attractions in India, the perimeter is surrounded by monkeys. I must really annoyed one without knowing it because it ambushed me by jumping over my head missing me by mere inches.

Directions: Overlooking Amber.
