The New York City skies *will* play tricks on you because the weather is, more often than not, quite unpredictable.
However, here are some "general weather conditions" :

-temperature : spring and especially fall are generally considered the best periods to visit New York City. During June-August, the city can be hot and humid with temperatures in the 85 deg. Farenheit / 30 deg. Celcius range, during the winter months, although rarely below freezing, it can seem bitterly cold due to the wind.

-rainfall : March and August are the months with the heaviest rainfall. Spring can be unpredictable. During the winter, sudden heavy snowfall can cause chaos in the city.

-sunshine : the city enjoys long hours of sunshine during June-August, with a peak in July. Autumn has more sunshine than spring, although both are sunny. Winter days are usually clear and bright.

HOWEVER : be prepared and expect the unexpected. Sudden showers or even thunderstorms are common in New York City. During the summer, take a sweater with you or the airconditioning-in-overdrive that seems to be on everywhere (especially in the subway) will have you freeze you butts off. Taking an umbrella with you is *never* a bad idea, either.
