  First Presbyterian Church
by b1bob

Presbyterians organised their first congregation in 1795. The present building was built in 1853 and expanded in 1925. The 188-foot (57 m.) steeple was once Columbia's tallest structure. A little hoodswankle saved the church from being destroyed by General Sherman's rampage during the War for Southern Independence. One of General Sherman's troops asked someone where the First Presbyterian Church was and the guy sent him down the road to burn something else.
