A canal it may be but I think Venetians would be having a wry smile when they hear the adjective "grand" attached to it. Any similarities are restricted to the facts that there is water here, there are boats on the water and it's in the middle of the town.
After that, there's not much to add.
It breaks the monotony of block after block of concrete and, under certain conditions, makes for a nice photo but, I have to say, my everlasting memory of the canal is the rubbish (including a supermarket trolley) at the bottom of it and the oil slick on the top. Rubbish is not a singular problem for the good people of Trieste I realise but it certainly blurred my memory of this canal.
The canal is the lone remaining one from a time when goods used to be transported via water craft to your doorstep. Venice kept the idea, Trieste filled all but one in as ships became larger and the system impractical.
