  The Philae temple

The Philae temple was built in honour of the goddess Isis on the Philea isle. The first disastrous consequences for the temple appeared after the construction of the first Nile dam. The rising water behind the dam threatened the temple. By the construction of the High Dam it would disappear completely under the water level. Therefore the UNESCO took the wise decision to dismantle and rebuild it on a higher spot on another island. The project started in 1972 and ended in 1980.

Directions: Southwards Aswan between the first and second Nile Dam
