"Visit the largest fair in Europe." Goose Fair Tip by sourbugger
Goose Fair, Nottingham: 2 reviews and 4 photos
It is claimed that the "Goose Fair" is the largest annual fair in Europe.
It's currently on it's 710th year and takes place during the first week in October each year at the Forest recreation ground about a mile from the City Centre. (Wed-Sat)
The place is filled with various amusements and sideshows - giving the place a real buzz. Traditionally large amounts of alcohol are also consumed during that time.
Originally the fair was held in the main square in Nottingham, but by the early part of the 20th century the site was inadequate and it was finally agreed to find a new venue. It's been on it's present site since 1928.
So why is it called the Goose fair ?
There is no definitive answer but many think farmers back in the middle ages drove flocks of Geese from Lincolnshire (my neck of the woods) and Norfolk to Nottingham to sell at this time of the year. They had to coat the feet of the birds in a sort of tar to ensure they arrived in a saleable state !
Address: Forest recreation ground
Directions: Don'y take a car - it is impossible.
