Mt Elbert at 14.433 feet, is the King of both the mighty Sawatch Range and of all of Colorado. A couple of trails will take you to its barren top. It is a hard hike - start early in the day to avoid afternoon thunderstorms and take lots of water. Remember to breathe deeply - the air up here is very thin! On the south side of Elbert, CO 82 runs over the very scenic Independence Pass -12095 feet high - among some of the highest mountains in Colorado, the back way into Aspen during the summertime.
