The most interesting starting point for exploring Tayside is the small city of Perth, only 50,000 people, capital of Perthshire and once the place where kings met, took power and were assassinated.

Perth is where the River Tay enters the estuary, and so the city has a long and turbulent history, ever since the first neolithic settlers rowed wooden canoes up the river.
