Highworth Off The Beaten Path: 2 reviews and 2 photos
If you are interested in seeing a fine example of a 13C Tithe Barn, then go approximately 5 miles from Highworth towards Faringdon, just over the border from Wiltshire into Oxfordshire, and you will find in the small village of Great Coxwell this magnificent barn.
The Barn was bequeathed to the National Trust in l956 .
King John gave the Cistercian monks the royal manor of Faringdon in 1203 for a new abbey, the abbey soon removed to Beaulieu in the New Forest, but Faringdon and its nearby granges,(including Coxwell) remained an important part of the economy of the house. Coxwell was an outlying part of the manor.
There is a lot more information on the barn, including it's structure, alterations, restoration, history, uses etc. but it is far too much to write here.
If you go to the national trust website listed below, it gives you the tythe barn details, admission prices, times of opening, contacts etc
click to enlarge the picture it shows the barn in all it's magnificence.
