  Roland on Bremen's Marktplatz
by jglsongs

The statue of the knight Roland, the symbol of freedom for the Free Hanseatic State of Bremen, stand guard on the Marktplatz in front of the Rathaus, diagonal from the Dom (Cathedral) and directly opposite to the entrance to the Böttcherstrasse.

Although the natives walk by Roland without noticing, he is the second most visited statue in the city (after the Bremer Stadtmusikanten).

Just be careful not to stare too long at him without watching where you're going- the city trams go by pretty quickly, as well as some senior citizen shoppers barging through to get to Karstadt or some other department store.

Address: Marktplatz, in the center of Bremen
Directions: On the main sqaure of the city; if you miss Roland, you miss Bremen.
