OK, actually Pompeii did have street names. But, what I want to comment on are the actual, physical streets of Pompeii. You will undoubtedly have to cross an intersection when you are walking around Pompeii. Be sure to notice the raised stones at each intersection. What were they put there for? Apparently, Pompeians did not have water engineers. Many of the homes lining the streets would have a store on the bottom level. Waste water from these shops and homes would be thrown out into the road and would mix with water that would overflow the public fountains, creating a constant stream in the streets. So, to keep the citizens? feet dry, they placed these stepping-stones to allow the people to cross without stepping in the waste.
