In 1514 the archers transferred their establishment to this building. Behind the building were targets (doelen in Dutch) where they could practise. Being a member of the civic guards was quite a prestige job since the members paid for their own equipment so not everybody could afford it. The guards patrolled the streets at night, squashed uproars and enabled to city to keep its obligation to deliver trained soldiers to the count when necessary.

The civic guards were abolished in 1762 by the government.
