EsglÚsia de Santa Maria del Mar

From the Plaša Santa Maria, stand back and take in the Gothic Facade of the EsglÚsia de Santa Maria del Mar considered by many, and justly so, to be the most beautiful church in Barcelona. It soaring majesty is uplifting and should not be missed.

The church was built relatively quickly, between 1329 and 1384 (I said relatively), resulting in a purity of style which ranks it as the most perfect example of Gothic church architecture in Catalonia. The facade exhibits all the characteristics of the Catalan Gothic Style: prevalance of horizontal lines, flat terraced roofing, wide open spaces, strong buttresses and octagonal towers ending in terraces.

The big rose window is 15th century, the original having been lost to an earthquake in 1428. The interior is, to put it simply, breathtaking and elegant.
