Old Bridge - Stari Most, Mostar: 41 reviews and 105 photos

The Old Bridge was constructed by Turks in the 16th century and until its destruction at the hands of Bosnian Croats in November of 1993, it was the symbol of the city. Well, actually, it still remains the symbol of Mostar. In fact, the city's name derives from the bridge. Most means bridge and Mostar means defenders of the bridge. All you have to do is browse a postcard rack in one of the souvenir stores near the bridge and you'll see that it is still the most featured symbol of the city.

Fortunately, with the help of international funds, it has been rebuilt and is due to reopen in June of 2004.

Currently (February 2004) there is a temporary bridge that crossed right next to the construction site of the Old Bridge and lets you get a good look of the progress.

***UPDATE*** The bridge was unveilved in July of 2004 and looks great!!
