  Preparing the Opium Welcome Drink
by Canadienne

One of the traditions in the countryside around Jodhpur is that a host would greet a visitor (historically, one who would have travelled for days, most likely on uncomfortable transportation) with a ritual drink of opium from his palm.

The opium was meant to relax and repair the stress of the travel and to allow the guest to get a good night’s rest. Even though our jeep ride could hardly be called rough, we were nevertheless welcomed at the Bishnois’ homestead with this very practice.
