  Prayer on the Ganges, Varanasi
by Canadienne

The Ganges is India's most sacred river. Many Hindus come to Varanasi to bathe in this holy river before dying, believing that the water with cleanse them of their sins and allow them escape the cycle of rebirth.

Despite its mythic importance, its waters and banks are not reserved strictly for prayer and meditation; the river is also the site of all sorts of ordinary rituals such as bathing and laundry.
