The special exhibits at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi offer a chance to see art by creative masters to whom you might otherwise never be exposed. I visited in December 2003, during a retrospective of Ramachandran. I was completely unfamiliar with this artist, but was very pleasantly surprised by the calibre of his work. The exhibit was extensive and well-planned, with just enough contextual information to place Ramachandran among his international peers.
There is also a permanent collection, but it's really only a secondary reason to visit. If the Ramachandran exhibit is any example, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to learn about a homegrown artist. It's also a quiet place to find yourself, if you're finding the hustle and bustle of the city a bit overwhelming.
