Steven Avenue, Calgary: 8 reviews and 15 photos
Stephen Avenue Walk was once the main street of Calgary in it's younger days, and is now a designated national historical district. There are over 40 restored historic sandstone buildings, and it extends down 8th Ave. SW from 3rd St. SW to 2nd St SE. This area is closed to vehicles most of the time, and connects many downtown destinations, such as The Glenbow Museum, shopping, galleries, restaurants, and theatre.
Before you start your day downtown, fuel up at the Avenue Diner -- chef Wayne Ennest serves up traditional diner fare with a modern twist. Check out the impressive lobby of the Hyatt Regency hotel, which has cleverly incorporated an old sandstone building into it's design. Browse the extensive collection at McNally Robinson Books and score some discounted designer wear at Winner's. Stop for a coffee sometime during the day, and put your feet up at The Good Earth Cafe. If you like browsing and shopping, be prepared to spend the day.
Directions: Stephen Avenue Walk is otherwise known as 8th Ave. SW; start at 3rd St SW, and make your way down to 2nd St SE, ending at Olympic Plaza and City Hall.
