Cloth Hall - Lakenhalle, Ieper: 30 reviews and 50 photos

Again the pride of Ieper: the Lakenhal.
by Pavlik_NL

After walking through the Boterstraat from the Fishmarket we are again in front of the Lakenhal and on the Marketsquare. Only in 1928 one started the reconstruction of the Lakenhal that always had been the pride of the "Ieperlingen" (inhabitants of Ieper). Sixty years later it would be finished, rudely interupted by five years of another war (that prooved that a war to end wars is not a solution). Architect Cooman started the work and from his hand were the initial drawings that were based on the real Lakenhal before. The ruines in Ieper first had to be broken down as they were to instable to be used. Later architect Pauwels finished the job that Coomans started. He never saw his masterpiece being complete. For the Lakenhal hard sandstone was transported from Artesia, as well as soft sandstone from Bray (Henegouwen / Hinaut). Furthermore a whole lot of yellow bricks were used. On the marketsquare is a maquette, made from metal, showing the complete hall.

Address: Marketsquare, centre of town.
