The MetroParks system is a natural gem! It's reffered to as the 'Emerald Necklace', being that the whole system takes a rough shape of a hanging necklace over the county. It is one the nation's largest metropark system.
If you want to do more than take in the scenery, there are many activities available...
There are bridle paths, biking & multi-purpose trails all over the place, as well as *many* meandering dirt trails that give access to wildflower growth and the like. The many reservations that build the system have a nature center and/or marina in accompaniment. Many also have some beautiful golf courses. Along the roads, there are frequent places to park (usually only a few spaces) and serve as a scenic overlook and/or to give access to a fishing location. The trees and foliage are always spectacular during all seasons, especially in Autumn & Winter; looks like a winter wonderland with the snow resting calmly on so many branches and other surfaces. Also, during the winter, the toboggan chutes are a must do! Do keep your headlights turned on the evening and (of course) at night because there is a deer population and we all know that when car meets deer, it's a bad thing. There are various nature centers through the entire network of reservations; each offers programs, events, activities and exhibits. Each nature center is free and I recommend that you use the website to scout for potential activities of interest.
Although I've written about a lot there, the website has so much more; I highly recommend looking through the website!
The parks open early in the morning (don't remember exactly when) and close at 11pm.
