Stone cairns rise out of the rocks of Bigelow Lawn

You reach the timberline in the White Mountains around 4500-5000 feet. On Mt Washington's southside is an upper plateau at 5000-5500 feet which is stony alpine tundra. This - and a couple of other such plateaus in the Presidentials - is known as a 'lawn'. Bigelow Lawn - this particular 'lawn' - stretchs south off the summit pyramid across the top of Tuckerman Ravine. You walk across it coming and going to Mt Washington, Tuckerman Ravine and the southern peaks of the Presidential Range. At the southwest corner of the lawn is the AMC Lakes of the Clouds Hut - overnight reservations are recommended. Trails crisscross the lawn in several directions, identifiable by the numerous tall stone cairns - stonemen - invaluable in low visibility situations.
