"Monumento dos Descobrimentos" Padrão dos Descobrimentos - Monument to the Discoveries Tip by leffe3

The Monument to the Discoveries is a huge 1960s slab o'concrete commissioned to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of King Henry the Navigator.

Its 52 metres high and adorning the outside (lead at the front by Henry himself) are stone statues are those contributing to the Portuguese Age of Discovery - discovererers, artists, patrons, royalty. It's a rather impressive monolith, sitting aside the Tigris with Henry staring out to sea.
