Cairns is another backpacker mecca on the East Coast of Australia. It offers a wide range of commercially hyped activities and great night entertainment. For those willing to open a few extra doors, Cairns can be a great window of opportunity. It offers so many interesting activities within reasonable price ranges. Some of them are even free if you have your own transport.
For those with a car, Cape tribulation is the best daytrip or overnight trip. It is found up north in the Daintree National Park. Check out my Cape Tribulation tip. For those heading south, then don?t miss the impressive Babinda Boulders National Park. You can do several lovely hikes in this park. The tropical rainforest canopy was an amazing site as well. It was a bit overdeveloped with good trails so it makes for a good stop for those that are not willing to get their feet dirty :). So, you want to go a bit inland? Then, do not miss the underground phenomenon found in the Undura Lava Tubes, which are one of the largest lava formed tubes in the world.
As for more expensive activities, well the sky is the limit. Scuba Diving is popular. The best trips are those heading north on visit to more secluded spots on the Great Barrier Reef; or better yet, far outside the continental shelf lies the practically untouched Holmes Reef. They are a bit more expensive, but worth it. The one day trips to the Great Barrier Reef are not worth the trouble as they stack you up with over 100 people at times.
For those heading up to the skies, then there is skydiving or bungee jumping. AJ Hacket, the original bungee jump creators, has a site in Cairns. I didn't bungee jump. Instead, I took a plunge on the giant Minjin Swing, which is a giant swing in the jungle. I have ridden this type before, but boy was it fun. Anne, a fellow traveler who joined me on the ride, and I screamed our hearts out as we reached 100km an hour flying through the jungle in the safety of the swing.
