Rockhampton is the beef producing capital of Australia. The town only had 60,000 people, yet the cow population is nearly 3 million.
While in town, check out the Dreamtime Center. They offer several free tours during the day. The tour starts on the cave complex, where we enjoyed a presentation about the Stencil People living up in the Carnarvon Gorge region. I wasn't aware that the Aboriginal people developed some of the best stencil techniques in the planets. Stencil art is created when the artists blows some paint into a surface blocking a cliff, wall, or cave. Common aboriginal designs include those created with hands, boomerangs, and fingers. Some complex designs took days or weeks to create. The Aboriginal art still thrives in several areas of Australia. The next exhibit was given by Jane, a friendly lady from an island up in the Torres Straight region. She was so kind and cheerful. Her looks are reminiscent of her South-Pacific roots. It serves you to see that not all aboriginals are from the Outback. In just a short time, she talked about her childhood and life growing up in her little island home. The third thing we did was a Boomerang lesson offered by an Aboriginal guide. Finally, we listen him play a didgeridoo. He played some classical sounds including the dingo haul, the kangaroo hop, and others.
The following morning, I visited Rocky's Botanical Garden, which is one of the nicest I?ve seen in Queensland. The Garden is divided into several sections. Among the highlights, there is a war obelisk, a Japanese Garden, a huge lake, and a zoo with all of your favorite Australian animals.
A visit to this town is not complete without an escapade to the gorgeous Great Keppel Is. If you plan on visiting the island for more then one night, then go ahead and book a room at the YHA through the Downtown Backpackers Hostel (not affiliated to the YHA) in Rockhampton. I bought their 3 day package to the GKI and so saved more money then purchasing it separately.
